Foundation of the Church

One Church. Two Locations.

In being led by the Lord in searching for a place of worship, Pastor Sawyer was led back to his roots in the small rural-like township of Camden, North Carolina. There, he found a small building on Highway 343, which he remodeled and made preparations to establish the church he would pastor. God revealed the name “Mt. Zion” to Pastor Sawyer, thus making it the first Church of God in Christ church established in Camden. On March 31, 1999, Elder Sawyer was installed by the Presiding Bishop of Greater North Carolina, Bishop LeRoy Jackson Woolard. The church serves in the Windsor District under the leadership of Superintendent Theoroger White.

In October 2004, just five years after starting the church, Pastor Sawyer and the members moved into their new, over 1100 square feet, edifice. The congregational membership has grown from its foundation days of 25 members to over 300 members present-day. The church also operates a Food Pantry bi-weekly. The church is about to embark on another building project, a Family Life Center, to serve the community and the surrounding counties.

Sixteen years later, on April 21, 2015, the doors of New Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ in Hertford, North Carolina opened; one church in two locations.

What We Believe

We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible written Word of God. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in Three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
We believe in the Blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church of God, which is in Christ at his return.
We believe that the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance, faith in the precious blood of Jesus Christ, and accepting the gospel according to Romans 10:9-10.
We believe that regeneration by the Holy Ghost is absolutely essential for personal salvation.
We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing for the human body in answer to believing prayer.
We believe that the baptism of the Holy Ghost according to Acts 2:4 is given to believers who ask for it.
We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by Whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a holy and separated life in this present world. Amen.
